Whiskey Tango Foxtrots: ABCs of Military Life

for the A to Z Challenge

W is for Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

I know that whiskey tango foxtrot is more than just one word but it such a good group of words. It is pretty much the longer short way to say WTF using military vernacular.

Every military family, spouse, and member has had their fair share of whiskey tango foxtrot moments. My favorite whiskey tango foxtrot moment thus far is a toss-up between the time I broke the faucet off the side of our house in Ohio as if I was impersonating the Incredible Hulk just days after my husband had left for deployment. And that one time my husband found out I took our lovely puppy Myka who decided to make friends with a less than friendly skunk to the groomer in his car while he was deployed.

Other long short ways to say things using the military vernacular that are quite popular within the military communities we have been a part of thus far are, It was a total charlie foxtrot and That was bravo sierra. Oh, and don’t forget I hear you lima charlie, because it is just so much longer to say I hear you loud and clear. Oh wait, it isn’t…my bad.

Can I just say talking in the military vernaculars alphabet can be quite entertaining. Just try replacing IDK with india delta kilo, and LOL with lima oscar lima. Not only is it fun to say, but it also confuses people! And it is a great way to get information past little kids. They may learn how to spell c-o-o-k-i-e or i-c-e c-r-e-a-m but it takes a lot longer for them to figure out what charlie oscar oscar kilo india echo or india charlie echo charlie romeo echo alpha mike means.
