F stands for The Fisher House: ABCs of Military Life

The Fisher House is so much more than just the houses.

I had no idea that the Fisher House existed until we were stationed in Ohio. We had been living there for about six months before we got married. Then shortly after our honeymoon my new husband left for training and eventually a  deployment. It wasn’t our first deployment, but it was the first time I would be alone.

Shortly after he left I was talking with some friends who encouraged me to sign up for some military spouse groups. I joined two different groups on base. And at the first meeting for the one group they had a sign up sheet to make a meal for the people staying at the Fisher House.

I had no idea what the Fisher House even was, but I put my name on the list anyway. During the meeting they started talking about how many people were currently staying at the Fisher Houses on base. I then asked the question of what exactly the Fisher House was. Turns out I wasn’t the only new spouse with that question. The veteran spouses were happy to explain it all to us.

The Fisher House is very similar to the Ronald McDonald House. Fisher Houses are located on base near the hospital and are meant for families of people receiving care at the hospital that live outside a certain mile range of base. It allows the families to be close to their loved ones during treatment, all free of charge.

However the Fisher House goes far beyond just being a place for families to stay, they have other programs as well, including…

Hero Miles

Hero Miles is a program where people can donate miles to help provide free airline tickets to military personnel and families who need to travel great distances for treatment.

Hotel for Heroes

Hotel for Heroes is a program where people can donate hotel points to help provide free hotel stays to family members to be close to their family member receiving treatment when there is no availability in Fisher Houses.

They also offer scholarships for military children and spouses. For more information on Fisher House programs, click here
